When Trump’s Big Ugly Bill was signed into law, it marked a dark day for our country and a disgraceful moment for Congress.
John, I did everything in my power to fight back – and I’m not done fighting yet. I submitted an amendment that would have reversed the harmful cuts to SNAP, joined my colleagues from the Congressional Black Caucus to attempt to force an up/down vote on removing the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, and spoke on the floor – calling for Republicans to reject this betrayal. I fought this bill every step of the way, and I will not back down now.
This bill will cause more harm than anything Congress has approved in recent history. This policy targets those who can least afford it: seniors on fixed incomes, veterans, and families already struggling to choose between gas and groceries. It turns the American Dream into a nightmare.
With this bill, the GOP chose to reward the wealthy at the expense of hungry Americans.
Republicans must face the consequences. I will keep working to undo these cruel cuts and hold Republicans accountable for taking away basic food and healthcare benefits from Americans and increasing our national debt to benefit billionaires.
