Yesterday, we found out that the NC Senate plans to vote TODAY on
HB 918, our child-centered legislation that protects at-risk
babies affected by the opioid epidemic in North
Carolina.
In our state alone, the
number of babies born with opioids in their system increased 10-fold
from 2004 to 2015. The number of children entering foster care because
of a parent’s addiction has increased 36.5% from 2010 to 2016.
Children who suffer from the inconsistent and detrimental
influence of an addicted parent get tossed around the foster care
system for years, often aging out of adoptability. They pay a price
that will likely follow them for life. It is past time to help these
children grow up in astable, loving home. HB 918 addresses this problem by
shortening the amount of time a child will remain in the foster care
system.
