
United States: The US State Department is embarking on a seismic internal transformation that will see the termination of 1,353 staff members, as unveiled in a private circular acquired by Reuters. The downsizing impacts 1,107 civil staffers and an additional 246 from the foreign service corps. The Associated Press has echoed these figures, citing corroborating sources.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, currently on diplomatic travel in Malaysia, acknowledged the development on July 10, affirming the department’s intent to enact the blueprint laid out weeks ago.
“We’re activating the architecture we had outlined to Congress after months of deliberation,” Rubio relayed to the press.
Though the structural reshuffle was originally introduced in April, its progress was obstructed in May when a federal judge temporarily shelved the initiative. However, the US Supreme Court rescinded the injunction on July 8, permitting the administrative pivot to proceed while the lower judiciary continues to deliberate on the legitimacy of such reductions.
