Email from Rep. Salazar As always it is an honor representing you and your family in Washington, D.C. FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 119, Issue #15 Dear Friends/Amigos, This week was an eventful time during which my team and I fought for the values that matter most to our community. Every step I take here is guided by the voices and stories I hear back home. Whether it’s on the House floor or in critical policy meetings, I’m making sure the priorities of District 27 are front and center. Your concerns shape my work and your voice drives every decision I make. We’re in this together. Let’s keep pushing forward. Follow along on Facebook, Instagram, and X for updates from Capitol Hill and from across our district. And if you'd like to reach out directly, don't hesitate to call or write to my D.C. office at (202) 225-3931 or visit Salazar.House.Gov. Sincerely/Atentamente, María E. Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) I am Reintroducing the Dignity ACT Now that President Trump has finally secured the border, it’s time to fix the rest of the system. America is feeling the impact. Cities are overwhelmed. Workers are needed. The system is broken and inaction has a cost. Millions have lived in the shadows for decades, working, paying taxes, raising families. They don’t want a handout. They want a chance. On July 15, the solution arrives. It’s called DIGNITY. The plan is rooted in law, order, and opportunity. I Sent a Letter Raising Concerns for Freedom Leader José Daniel Ferrer I sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighting my concern that the situation of freedom leader José Daniel Ferrer has become dire. The letter asks that the Secretary of State use the full weight of his office to fight for José Daniel. José Daniel Ferrer is not just any dissident; he is the most important and credible leader of the opposition on the island today. I have asked the Secretary to please do whatever is possible to achieve the liberation of José Daniel before his health gets any worse. Let this serve as a warning: if anything happens to José Daniel Ferrer, there must be serious consequences. The United States and its allies cannot allow another Cuban hero to die in silence. Background The regime thugs at Mar Verde prison in Santiago de Cuba have beaten José Daniel multiple times in two weeks. Conditions at the concentration camp are horrendous and his life is in danger. The United States is the only country in the world that has the power to protect freedom fighters like José Daniel. I urge the Secretary to do everything possible to secure the liberation of José Daniel before his health gets any worse. You can read the full letter here. I Introduced a Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing the Role of the U.S. in Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict Following the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on June 19th, I along with Grace Meng (NY-06), introduced a bipartisan resolution in the House of Representatives reaffirming the role of the United States in eliminating sexual violence in conflict. Throughout history, sexual violence has been used as a weapon of war. In 2023, women and girls accounted for 95% of the reported cases of conflict-related sexual violence, enduring rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, enforced sterilization, and forced marriage. Sexual violence is considered a war crime, a crime against humanity, and an act of genocide and torture under international law. Despite this, it continues around the world with little accountability for its perpetrators. The resolution aims to underscore the need for the United States to continue to play a leading role in addressing conflict-related sexual violence and strengthening legal reforms and justice for all survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. It also seeks to recognize the need for all peace agreements to address conflict-related sexual violence and calls on the United States to ensure mechanisms to hold perpetrators of sexual violence accountable are included in peace building resolutions. The resolution further emphasizes the importance of women’s meaningful participation in peace processes, as outlined in the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017. Additionally, the resolution would uplift and recognize the survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, and those working to support them, to ensure they are not forgotten. Rape should never be a weapon of war. It is an act of evil, used by tyrants and terrorists to break the human spirit. As the world’s leading democracy, the United States will stand with the survivors, punish the perpetrators, and demand justice. I’m proud to join Congresswoman Meng in this bipartisan effort to make clear that we will defend human dignity, and sexual violence in conflict will not be ignored, excused, or forgotten.
