A win for Maine voters

In a win for Maine voters and for using clear language, not euphemisms, to describe voter suppression, the state’s Supreme Court upheld language on an anti-voter ballot question. Conservative backers of the measure had challenged the language, which was approved by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D).
"The phrase indicating that the proposed legislation would 'end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities' is accurate,” the Court said. “They are the only groups whose 'ongoing absentee voter status' will be ended by the proposed legislation."

Republicans continue attack on direct democracy

Yesterday Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe (R) signed a bill that limits minimum wage increases and ensures that paid sick leave does not have to be an employer requirement. This comes after 58% of voters in the state voted last year to increase the minimum wage and require sick leave.
It’s another way the GOP is weakening direct democracy – by passing laws to undermine popular measures that voters already approved.
