Email from Judy Chu June was a chaotic month filled with heinous attacks on our rights and our immigrant communities. Dear John, June was a chaotic month filled with heinous attacks on our rights and our immigrant communities. In addition to attending Pride celebrations and three No Kings protests against the Trump Administration’s increasingly authoritative regime, I was out in my district and on the Hill fighting for you and our democracy. In Los Angeles last month, ICE started violent raids against immigrants, targeting people at their workplaces and homes. These mass raids carried out by masked ICE agents caused chaos across Southern California. Instead of trying to de-escalate the situation, President Trump deployed the National Guard and the Marines to the streets of LA to cause more chaos. Dozens of protestors, immigrants, and even U.S. citizens were detained in LA, left in horrible conditions with no legal resources or ability to communicate with their families. When I tried to conduct Congressional oversight on the Adelanto detention center, ICE padlocked the fence around the facility to keep me out. It is my job and my legal right as your Congressmember to perform this crucial oversight, and the American people deserve to know what is going on behind closed doors. The Metropolitan Detention Center in LA—where the people detained during the raids and protests were being held—also denied me access. When I finally gained access to the Adelanto center, what I witnessed were inhumane conditions and detainees completely denied their civil rights and due process. President Trump made unprecedented attacks against our immigrant communities, and our right to dissent and protest the government. He is quickly bringing us down a path of authoritarianism where Trump is king and the Constitution is meaningless. I will continue to show up to these detention centers and demand answers for the American people. To add to his hateful actions against immigrants, the president also reinstituted travel bans on over 19 countries. As the sponsor of the NO BAN Act, which would prohibit these xenophobic travel bans, I organized my Congressional colleagues in sending an oversight letter to President Trump, demanding he withdraw his discriminatory ban and provide answers about how these bans will hurt American families. In another attempt to thwart the Trump Administration and their disastrous policies and disgusting rhetoric, I also reintroduced the Women’s Health Protection Act to this Congress to enshrine the right to abortion care across the country again. Even though he is ruthlessly attacking us, I am determined to stand up to President Trump and the dangerous things coming out of his administration. Times seem scary right now. But I am fighting every day to push back against this administration. I won’t give up my fight for my district and people across the country whose livelihoods are being threatened by Trump.
