Neighbors,

This week marked an important step forward in our shared efforts to build a stronger, more equitable District.

On Tuesday, the Council concluded its final work session ahead of the summer recess, laying the groundwork for critical legislative and budgetary action. Earlier this morning, I convened a mark-up hearing in the Committee on Business and Economic Development to advance legislation that will drive economic development, grow our local sports economy, and expand opportunities for D.C. youth and small businesses.

Looking ahead, the Council will hold its first vote on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget during our Legislative Meeting on Monday, July 14. I will continue fighting to ensure that this budget meets the moment by investing in our young people, creating pathways to economic opportunity, supporting working families, and delivering real resources to communities in all eight wards.

Thank you for continuing to stay engaged and informed. I look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.

In service,

Advancing D.C. as the Nation’s Sports Capital, B26-0119, the “Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Amendment Act of 2025”

This morning, as Chair of the Committee on Business and Economic Development, I convened a mark-up hearing to consider and vote on Bill 26-0119, the “Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Act of 2025.” The meeting was called to order at 9:22 a.m. and a quorum was established with the presence of myself, Councilmember Bonds, and Councilmember Felder.

Following an overview of the bill, Councilmember Bonds spoke in strong support, highlighting that this legislation goes beyond a simple Sense of the Council, it establishes a forward-looking partnership with Events DC to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that positions Washington, D.C. as the premier destination for sports and entertainment nationwide.

The Committee unanimously approved the measure by a vote of 3–0.

The bill formally designates the District of Columbia as the Official Sports Capital of the United States and tasks the Washington Convention and Sports Authority (Events DC) with creating a strategic plan to elevate the District’s national profile. The plan will promote major professional, collegiate, and amateur sporting events, expand economic activity tied to the sports economy, and deepen investments in youth athletic programming and workforce development in sports-related industries.

This legislation reflects our commitment to honoring D.C.’s sports legacy while driving economic growth, tourism, and youth opportunity across all eight wards. I look forward to working with Events DC and our community partners to bring this vision to life.
