Dear Angeleno,

I just signed an Executive Directive ([link removed]) to support Los Angeles’ immigrant communities in the wake of these unlawful raids conducted by the federal government. I’ve instructed City Departments to bolster their protocols and training to prepare for federal immigration activity occurring on City property, establish an LAPD working group and expand access to resources for impacted families. The order also seeks records from the federal government on unlawful raids from federal agencies.

The Directive Bolsters City Protocols That Prohibit Use of City Resources for Immigration Enforcement, Expands Access to Resources For Impacted Families, Establishes New LAPD Working Group And Seeks Records From Federal Agencies About Unlawful Raids
The White House is continuing its all out assault on our American city. Despite a lawsuit from the administration ([link removed]) against our longstanding city policies prohibiting the use of city resources for immigration enforcement and the many lies told by members of the administration. I will not be intimidated, and we, the people of Los Angeles, will not be intimidated.

Despite continued threats to divide our city, we are leading a coordinated response because Los Angeles is a city of immigrants and we will always take care of one another.
RESPONDING TO THE ESCALATION AT MACARTHUR PARK: We all witnessed a massive show of force in MacArthur Park with federal agents, military vehicles and federalized troops onsite while children were at summer camp. It’s outrageous and un-American. I went to MacArthur Park to speak to the agent in charge and let them know that these actions should end now.

TAKING URGENT LEGAL ACTION: This week, I joined LA City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto and regional LA mayors to announce that we are taking the administration to court ([link removed]) to stop this clear violation of the United States Constitution and federal law. The lawsuit alleges that federal agencies have engaged in unconstitutional and unlawful immigration raids by targeting Angelenos based on their perceived race and ethnicity and also denying detainees constitutionally-mandated due process.

CREATING IMPACTFUL PARTNERSHIPS: We’ve secured a vital partnership ([link removed]) with the LA Dodgers to provide $1 million toward direct financial assistance to those financially impacted by these raids. Through their support of the City’s effort, the Dodgers will encourage those organizations in a similar position to use their resources to directly support the families who have suffered economic hardship.

SUPPORTING IMPACTED BUSINESSES: I’ve also met with business owners in Boyle Heights ([link removed]) , Little Tokyo ([link removed]) and Pico-Union ([link removed]) to hear directly how these federal actions have impacted our local economy. Small businesses are seeing less foot traffic and decreased revenue, forcing them to face tough financial decisions. I encourage Angelenos to support our local businesses in the City that are the heart of our city.
Our local economy has taken a body blow because of these raids and LA’s businesses are paying the price.
REVITALIZING DOWNTOWN LA: In response to the vandalism caused by the military presence in Los Angeles, my office has coordinated beautification efforts in Downtown to show the true spirit of our City. To support Downtown local businesses, the Mayor’s Office in coordination with Councilmember Ysabel Jurado and other City Departments have hosted webinars ([link removed]) to provide assistance with requesting facility restoration like graffiti removal, accessing legal resources, employment relief and applying for federal and state financial relief.
As your Mayor, I will always fight to protect all who call this City home. And all of us in LA will continue to stand together – with our unity only growing stronger.
In solidarity,
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Whether you are at work, home or in your community, it's important that all Angelenos know their rights and are prepared when interacting with law enforcement – including immigration agents.
* If officers ask you questions, you have the right to say: “I choose to remain silent.”
* You have the right to consult with an attorney before answering any questions or signing any documents.
* If you have valid U.S.immigration documents, carry them with you. Never carry false documents or lie about your immigration status.
* No law enforcement officer can enter your home without your permission unless that officer has a warrant signed by a judge or magistrate. An administrative warrant from the Department of Homeland Security does not give officers the right to enter your home against your will.
