Dear john,

I hope you and your families were able to find rest and relaxation during the 4th of July weekend. It was difficult to return home following passage of the Trump Administration's budget reconciliation package, which I believe will have devastating impacts on communities across the country. Together with my House Democratic colleagues, we fought through the night to challenge our Republican colleagues and attempt to make commonsense improvements to this bill—I offered an amendment to protect health care benefits and food assistance, and House Republicans refused to even consider it.

I was proud to stand united in opposition to legislation that will bring harm to some of our nation's most vulnerable populations. While this bill may have become law, I am determined to make sure people truly understand its impacts. In Georgia alone, over 600,000 people will lose their health care benefits. SNAP benefits will be cut for hundreds of thousands of families--including over a million veterans who rely on this program. Health care and food assistance should never be used as a bargaining chip—everyone deserves the chance to live a long and health life. This bill takes us further from the American dream.

When Speaker Johnson announced he was cancelling votes this week, I knew it would be important to spend time with people here at home to make sure my constituents understand: we may have lost the battle, but we have not given up the fight. As your Congresswoman, I will continue to press forward and defend the needs of those I am honored to serve. That's why I was proud to uplift some truly remarkable organizations who are on the front lines serving our community every single day.

It was my joy to visit Agape Youth and Family Center to spend time with their summer camp students. My team and I helped serve lunch, and I got to catch up with some of my youngest constituents. The future is bright thanks to the work of Agape!

I also joined Good Samaritan Center of Douglas County this week to assist at their food pantry. With the impending cuts to federal food assistance, the work of local food pantries and food banks will be more important than ever. I commend the work Good Samaritan Center is doing every single day, and I look forward to sustained dialogue with organizations like them and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to continue supporting their mission in any way that I can. No person should worry where their next meal is coming from.

As part of my continued legislative responsibilities, I am laser focused on protecting and defending some of our society's most vulnerable. That is why I teamed up with a bipartisan group of lawmakers in introducing the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act. This bipartisan, bicameral bill would direct the Department of Labor to train its employees to identify human trafficking and refer suspected trafficking crimes to law enforcement. For more on this bill, check out my press release.

Just last night, I led 150 of my House Democratic colleagues in pressuring the Trump Administration to release nearly $7 billion in illegally withheld, Congressional-appropriated federal funding for education related programs. We all have a responsibility and an obligation to the American people—it's time for the Trump Administration to follow the law and release this funding. To read our letter, click here.
