Dear john,
I hope you and your families were able to find rest and relaxation during the 4th of July weekend. It was difficult to return home following passage of the Trump Administration's budget reconciliation package, which I believe will have devastating impacts on communities across the country. Together with my House Democratic colleagues, we fought through the night to challenge our Republican colleagues and attempt to make commonsense improvements to this bill—I offered an amendment to protect health care benefits and food assistance, and House Republicans refused to even consider it.
I was proud to stand united in opposition to legislation that will bring harm to some of our nation's most vulnerable populations. While this bill may have become law, I am determined to make sure people truly understand its impacts. In Georgia alone, over 600,000 people will lose their health care benefits. SNAP benefits will be cut for hundreds of thousands of families--including over a million veterans who rely on this program. Health care and food assistance should never be used as a bargaining chip—everyone deserves the chance to live a long and health life. This bill takes us further from the American dream.
When Speaker Johnson announced he was cancelling votes this week, I knew it would be important to spend time with people here at home to make sure my constituents understand: we may have lost the battle, but we have not given up the fight. As your Congresswoman, I will continue to press forward and defend the needs of those I am honored to serve. That's why I was proud to uplift some truly remarkable organizations who are on the front lines serving our community every single day.
It was my joy to visit Agape Youth and Family Center to spend time with their summer camp students. My team and I helped serve lunch, and I got to catch up with some of my youngest constituents. The future is bright thanks to the work of Agape!
