John,

I have been extremely bothered by this recent story, and the choices that got us here:

“In the past two weeks alone, California Democrats have retrenched on environmental reviews for construction projects, a cap on oil industry profits and clean fuel mandates. Elected officials are warning that ambitious laws and mandates are driving up the state’s onerous cost of living, echoing longstanding Republican arguments and frustrating some allies who say Democrats are capitulating to political pressure.”

Why can’t we do both, John?

On the politics front, I will be absolutely clear that no Democrat has ever won or will win elections trying to out-Republican the right-wing candidate.

And on the policy side, it’s a false choice between keeping our environment – and as a result, us – healthy, or making things affordable.

It’s not affordability OR addressing the climate. It’s affordability AND addressing our climate. Wildfires, severe droughts, and rising sea levels are not going away.

How we choose to deal with the warming climate intersects with so many issues we face: from our food and supply chain, to addressing the safety of our beaches, to public health concerns like air and water quality and chronic health conditions, and yes, in opportunities for our economy.

And that’s before touching on how the groups most affected by the impacts of climate are our most underserved, our frontline communities that need strong policy to help them build their own environmental and economic resilience.

With competent, accountable leadership, a state government that is more connected to the needs of everyday people, California can elevate its ambition in addressing the climate crisis with its talent and innovation.

I am fighting to bring that dynamic thinking to California, to invest in our communities and build housing as well as finding approaches to protect our environment. With your continued support we can do both. Chip in $3 to build a state that addresses EVERYTHING we need.

I can’t thank you enough for your support.
