It’s Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. I wanted you to hear directly from me on something you’ve seen in the news recently.
I was asked at a press conference about ICE agents wearing masks to do their work. I told the press clearly I was disturbed by these actions and that they erode trust in law enforcement. I said clearly – other officers in Arizona do their jobs in uniform without masks, and ICE can too.
They gave me an excuse for the masks. And I said it was bullshit.
Being a fighter for the people means that you stand up for the people, even if it requires a curse word and doing something others are scared to do.
ICE can do their jobs without looking like secret police. The officers at the Arizona Attorney General’s office almost never mask, and neither do other police officers. Masking is a sign of an authoritarian state.
Masked ICE officers are eroding trust in law enforcement, creating dangerous situations and wrongly detaining American citizens. When that happens, I’m going to speak up.
