Overview: Last week, President Trump signed into law what he namedthe One Big Beautiful Bill. Included in the final version are significant cuts to Medicaid and SNAP through burdensome work and eligibility requirements. CCUSA, among other national Catholic organizations, visited and corresponded frequently with members of Congress and their staff urging them to protect programs that help individuals and families who are most in need.

Congress has turned its attention to the appropriations process. The Trump administration's rescissions package (which would cut previously approved spending) has the potential to stop any progress in appropriations and could lead to a continuing resolution in order to avoid a government shutdown on September 30, 2025.

Economy: In the week ending July 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims ([link removed]) was 227,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 1,000 from 233,000 to 232,000. The 4-week moving average was 235,500, a decrease of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 250 from 241,500 to 241,250.

Reducing homelessness: U.S. Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) today introduced the Reducing Homelessness Through Program Reform Act. CCUSA supported the introduction of this bill.If passed, the legislation would cut federal red tape and allow homeless service providers to respond more quickly and effectively to local needs ([link removed]), according to a press release published by Senator Rounds.

But because he wished to justify himself, [the scholar of the law] said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.' Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?" He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 10:29-37
