John,

Here at SEEC PAC, we’ve been devastated by the tragic flooding in Texas that has claimed over 100 lives, with even more missing. Our thoughts are with the people of Texas, who will feel the aftershocks of this mass tragedy for years to come.

No one should have to question whether or not their elected officials or public services can keep them safe in natural disasters. It should be a given that our emergency systems will serve us when we need them the most – and yet, it’s clear that Texans have been failed. They deserved better.

Even before Donald Trump took office, National Weather Service (NWS) offices around the country already had low staffing levels. In the past few months, these numbers have dipped even further to critical levels due to hundreds of layoffs in the name of “government efficiency.”

SEEC members had warned about the risks of losing key NWS personnel, and now we need your help to amplify our message. Add your name to our petition telling Congress to fill the NWS vacancies immediately. At a time when natural disasters are increasing in scale and frequency, we need more hands on deck – not fewer! Add Your Name » [[link removed]]SEEC Member Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20) has been at the helm of this effort, calling for investigations into the possible role that these NWS staffing cuts may have played into the sheer scale of this tragedy. While updates are rolling in by the hour, here’s what we do know:

* Two of Texas’s NWS offices involved in forecasting and warning about flooding on the Guadalupe River are missing key staff members.

* A director of the NWS union went on the record to state that their Austin/San Antonio office is missing a warning coordination meteorologist due to the Trump administration’s buyouts earlier this year.

In Texas, folks in the flood zone were not prepared or evacuated – this was a preventable tragedy that we need to all come together to ensure never happens again. If you agree that Congress must prioritize hiring NWS personnel to keep Americans safe, please sign our petition today: [[link removed]]
