Hey friends, Today, we’re proud to share our 2025-2026 electoral priority states. Winning in these states in the coming electoral cycle is a critical step in our fight for fair maps. The NDRC is focused on making our democracy one where voters pick their politicians, not the other way around. We’re building on our past electoral successes and advancing the fair maps movement as a whole. Over the next two years, we’re investing in critical elections that will shape the future of fair maps across at least 13 states. By electing pro-democracy champions at the state level in 2025 and 2026, we can prevent mid-decade gerrymandering and build a foundation for fair and independent redistricting following the release of the 2030 Census data. Our primary goals include:
And here’s this round of priority states for 2025-2026:
The NDRC is the first-ever strategic hub for comprehensive redistricting strategy, and our long-term strategic planning is guided by our team’s unique expertise and experience, data-driven mapping and political analysis, redistricting history and legal precedents, and population trends reflected in rolling census projections. These priority states have extremely high stakes, and we want to make the greatest impact for protecting the fair maps we’ve already achieved and preparing for the redistricting battles yet to come. By now, you know as well as we do that there is no longer an “off season” when it comes to redistricting. That’s why our 2025-2026 priority states are critical — to take on the fights underway and prepare for what is ahead. As you read this email, anti-democracy forces are challenging fair maps in court, undermining redistricting reforms, laying the groundwork to keep Election Deniers in office (or elect new ones) who will overturn fair maps, and threatening to draw gerrymandered maps ahead of the 2025 and 2026 elections. We’re zeroing in on states like Virginia and Pennsylvania this year because of critical state supreme court and legislative races — races that will directly shape the future of fair maps. In Ohio, a mid-decade redraw is already underway due to the state’s historical trend of packing Democratic voters into smaller districts. In Texas, Gov. Abbott has called for a mid-decade redraw after the Trump administration pressured lawmakers to engage in a “ruthless” gerrymander. Gerrymandering is a critical tool for those trying to erode our democracy, and they are not waiting for the next redistricting cycle. Republicans are drawing from their most extreme ideologies to build artificial power and advance a far-right agenda that serves them, rather than the American people. Team, every dollar, no matter how big or small, makes all the difference in the fight for fair maps and the work being done at the NDRC. We are strategic and intentional in our efforts, and your contributions have helped to build maps that get us closer to a truly representative democracy. Whether it was a $30 donation that fueled our mobilization efforts in Texas when the Trump administration encouraged a “ruthless” mid-decade gerrymander, or a $300 donation that powered rapid response efforts in North Carolina when the opponent refused to concede, this team’s support has been a backbone to the NDRC’s work.
Thanks! Claire Low
