Dear Friend,
I wanted to take an opportunity to update you on my recent work during the month of June in Washington, D.C. and Connecticut.
I am still fighting to rein in President Trump who has shut down federal agencies, fire federal employees, and pass destructive, devastating budget cuts that hurt hardworking Americans. These actions steal from, seniors, veterans, working families, small business owners, and farmers to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.
I will continue to use my voice as your Representative to speak against these devastating cuts. For a more detailed look at what the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” becoming law means for you or your loved ones, please subscribe to our eNewsletter here. My office will continue to send out the most updated information.
Last month, I joined the Connecticut Hospital Association, Griffin Hospital, Middlesex Health, and Yale New Haven Health to discuss the disastrous Medicaid cuts. The “One Big, Beautiful Bill” threatens health care access for 17 million Americans and would take HUSKY (Medicaid) and Access Health CT (Affordable Care Act) health coverage away from 186,580 Connecticut residents. The State of Connecticut will now be forced to make impossible choices about who will remain eligible for health care coverage and what procedures will be covered.
I will do everything I can as the lead Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee to help mitigate the damage that raises costs. I will not stop fighting until we reverse the changes made by this awful bill. To learn more about my recent work on health care affordability, please click here.

This month, I led Democrats in several Appropriations Committee markup hearings where I fought to protect crucial funding for programs that directly support veterans, national security, and reproductive rights.
You can read my statements at each Full Committee hearing below:
On June 16th, I celebrated the opening of affordable housing units in New Haven named after Reverend Curtis Cofield II, a giant in our community who dedicated his life to advocacy. Every person deserves access to affordable housing, and I am proud to see this vision become reality. There is more work to be done, and I am prepared to fight the President’s cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). His proposal would all but eliminate affordable housing construction and critical housing assistance programs, creating a catastrophe of evictions and homelessness at an unbelievable scale.
This month I also spoke at the Black Business Alliance in Milford on the importance of ending pay inequality. Full-time working women in Connecticut only make 84 cents for every dollar a man does. Nationally, across all earners, Black women only earn 64 cents on the dollar compared to white men. This is why I am fighting to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act in Congress, to end pay discrimination once and for all. I was proud to reintroduce this legislation in March with every Democrat and one Republican supporting the bill. The House has passed this bill four times – I will not stop until it passes both chambers and is signed into law.
100 years ago, Frank and Filomena Pepe opened their doors and transformed New Haven’s food scene. I thank them for a century of incredible apizza, giving back to the New Haven community, and preserving Italian American culture through each pie. I was so proud to stand along fellow community leaders and the Pepe family to celebrate this milestone and unveil the Frank and Filomena Pepe Corner on Wooster Street.

Last year, I was proud to help secure $3 million in Community Project Funding to make the new Fair Haven Community Health Center a reality and support its ability to continue delivering high-quality health care for our community. I was thrilled to be shown around the facility this month to see all the progress that has been made with federal funding. Investing in health is investing in our future. You can read more about the Community Project Funding I secured for our district here.

On the House floor, I spoke in opposition to the Republicans’ proposed steps towards privatizing veterans’ health care. This will be disastrous for thousands of veterans who have earned their benefits through sacrifices for our nation. We must support our veterans and not leave them to fend for themselves. The LGBTQI+ community deserves to live freely with the same rights and freedoms as any other American. I was proud to join members of the community at multiple Pride events across the district and will never stop fighting for equality.
In Case You Missed It (ICYMI): I also met with talented artists in our community at this year’s Congressional Art Competition Reception. To all of the talented students who participated, congratulations! I look forward to continuing to enjoy your work.

I will continue my efforts in Congress to get results for the families and communities of the Third District.
