Citizens for Ethics & Responsibility in Washington

John,

After Watergate, Congress created a 10 year term for FBI directors, passed a law to prevent presidents from dismantling federal agencies and created independent inspector general offices in federal agencies—all to prevent another president from abusing the office like President Nixon did.

But since taking office, President Trump has undermined *all* of those ethics measures.

As one lawyer from the Senate Watergate Committee told the Washington Post:

“Nixon was essentially a criminal, but an ordinary criminal who accepted the fact that the laws applied to him and that if he tried to violate them he would be subject to punishment. Trump considers himself above the law, so that the system is to be rejected by him when he feels like it should be.”

Well John, CREW has a message for Donald Trump: The law is not optional. We’re going to keep holding Trump accountable in the courts and in public advocacy, but we can’t do it alone. Can you make a MATCHED donation today to help hold Trump accountable? →

After Watergate, Congress knew that it had to step in to ensure that no president would commit corruption the way Nixon did. It says a lot that Trump is rolling back and undermining so many of those reforms.

With so many of his actions, Trump is making clear that he does not see corruption in government as a bad thing.

  • Trump pardoned a total of 16 corrupt politicians—allowing them to evade roughly 50 and a half years of prison time.
  • Trump failed to divest from his businesses, setting the stage for untold conflicts of interest.
  • Trump even *literally* auctioned off access to the presidency to the highest bidder.

But here’s the thing: corruption in government is unpopular. When the American people know about it, they disapprove.

That’s why CREW’s work is so important. We report out and provide expert analysis, helping to raise the alarm and show that Trump’s unprecedented corruption will not go unnoticed or unchecked.
