Dear friend,
Thanks to you, something remarkable has happened.
The fight to legalise assisted dying isn’t over. We’ve made real progress in the Commons, but now the spotlight turns to the House of Lords, and the challenge is just as great. I’m asking for your help again, so we can build on everything we’ve achieved and keep moving forward.
The Bill now moves to the House of Lords, with its crucial Second Reading scheduled for Friday 12 September. Anti-choice campaigners are already fighting tooth and nail to block this law change and we simply cannot risk failure when we are so close to real change. So, I am asking you to back the campaign once again and donate to ensure this opportunity doesn’t slip away: www.dignityindying.org.uk/lordsfund
That’s why I’m asking you to donate to Dignity in Dying’s crowdfunder today. With your support, we can give this Bill the best possible chance of success in the Lords.
I first became a part of this campaign in 2012. My reason for doing so is simple and, sadly, will be common to many of you. I witnessed devastating and unnecessary suffering when my older brother, David, died of bone cancer, something no one should endure.
I’ve seen what safe, legal assisted dying can look like. I saw the comfort gained from knowing the choice is available, and I saw the peace it can provide for dying people. I want that for us.
Despite the Bill receiving 100 hours of detailed scrutiny by MPs, taking evidence from 50 witnesses and considering 600 amendments, and despite the cross-party House of Commons Health Committee finding no evidence in jurisdictions where assisted dying is legal to support our opponents’ fears, they continue to make the same baseless claims to justify disrupting the bill. We can’t let this nonsense persist, and we cannot risk failing now.
If you possibly can, please make a gift today to help us stop anti-choice activists from sabotaging the Bill, you can donate quickly and easily here: www.dignityindying.org.uk/lordsfund
I know it is uncomfortable to be baldly asked for money, but I know you will agree that we need to see this law finally passed. Sadly, we need more funding to ensure it will be. If not, we could fall short and this once-in-a-generation opportunity could be lost.
Together we will change the law.
