On Thursday July 17th, the anniversary of Rep. John Lewis’ passing, we’re mobilizing across the country (and taking to the streets) to demand that Congress protect our rights and ensure free and fair elections for all.
The Trump administration is waging one of the most sweeping assaults on civil and human rights we’ve seen in a generation. From the SAVE Act’s dangerous voter suppression tactics to laws that target protest itself, they're attempting to silence dissent and dismantle the very foundations of democracy.
Need ideas/supplies or just want an opportunity to do something meaningful with like-minded people? We've got you covered!
The Democrats of Indian River will be hosting a sign making workshop along with our partners at dem headquarters (2706 20th St.) from 10AM-3PM on the 16th.
We have 1,000 calls to make and less than 1 week to do it!
Join us in our NEW office on Monday 7/14 or Tuesday 7/15 to call our loyal defenders of democracy and let them know that we will be taking to the streets on July 17th to celebrate the life of John Lewis and embrace good trouble during these troubling times.
Rain or shine, we show up!
This 4th of July, our incredible volunteers turned out to staff the booth, register voters, collect petition signatures, and help folks sign up to vote by mail.
Even with the recent news about the Big “Beautiful” Bill, we remain committed, energized, and ready. The weather didn’t stop us, and setbacks won’t either.
Democracy takes work. And we’re here for it

Update: Fl Democratic Lawmakers denied access to "Alligator Alcatraz"
In early July, the DeSantis administration blocked five Democratic lawmakers from entering the new immigration detention site built in the Everglades; despite their legal right to inspect such facilities.
The site, rapidly constructed under emergency powers, is projected to cost taxpayers $450 million annually, yet lacks formal authorization or funding from federal agencies like DHS or FEMA.
Following the denial of access on July 3rd, lawmakers filed a lawsuit with the Florida Supreme Court, accusing DeSantis of obstructing legislative oversight and overstepping constitutional boundaries.
Shortly after, the administration announced a scheduled tour for legislators and members of Congress; However, the “tightly controlled walkthrough” fails to meet the standard for genuine oversight.
From the Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried
“Lawmakers on the ground were just blocked from entering a state-funded detention site because of so-called ‘safety concerns’. This is a taxpayer-funded facility, run by the State of Florida. Our elected officials have every legal right to walk through those gates. What are Ron DeSantis and his administration trying to hide? If it’s unsafe for lawmakers to visit, how is it safe for anyone inside?"
