Resources to Help You Deal with the Heat

We encourage you to review our Cooling Assistance Resources ([link removed]) (PDF) and apply to see if you are eligible for the various City and State cooling assistance programs. New York City also has a network of Cooling Centers ([link removed]) open to the public free of charge. You can find the nearest Cooling Center here ([link removed]) . The National Integrated Heat Health Information System has even more resources – from planning and preparing to staying safe – available at heat.gov

Rallying to Save the EPA
Sasha St. Juste spoke at a rally this week to support employees at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Last week, 139 EPA staff - including 14 from our local Region 2 office - were suspended and placed on administrative leave after signing onto a letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin voicing concern about the administration's disregard of scientific consensus, canceling environmental justice programs, rolling back regulations, and other actions that undermine the agency's mission to protect public health and the environment.

East Harlem Environmental Justice Tour
We have had the pleasure of working with BioBus ([link removed]) , a nonprofit helping New York City students excluded from the scientific community discover, explore, and pursue science. So, we were happy to take their college and high school interns on our East Harlem Environmental Justice Tour last week. Originally designed as a heat tour, to show participants the impact of extreme heat on communities like East Harlem, our new East Harlem Environmental Justice Tour helped the students better understand many of the environmental justice issues our Northern Manhattan communities face - including extreme heat - along with some of the solutions we have helped achieve!

Service of Appreciation for Federal Environmental Justice Staff and Grantees
For many in our movement, the environmental justice staff at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies have been tireless public servants working to advance equitable programs and policies. To show our appreciation in these challenging times, the United Church of Christ is hosting a service of appreciation to honor those working on environmental justice with gratitude. This virtual event will be held Wednesday, July 25th at 1:00 PM via Zoom, and will feature a number of environmental justice

A Politico ([link removed]) article focused on the letter we co-signed to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and the heads of the State's Public Service Commission, Department of Environmental Conservation, and Research and Development Authority criticizing the New York Independent System Operator's Power Trends report that calls for additional fossil fuel power - contrary to the agency's own analysis. WWLP-TV ([link removed]) , a local NBC affiliate, ran a similar story.

Our support for the EPA employees suspended for urging Administrator Lee Zeldin to adhere to the agency's mission of protecting public health and the environment was noted in Gothamist ([link removed]) . Sasha St. Juste spoke at the rally in New York City on Wednesday (see story above).
