Senator Sarah O’Reilly
** Senator O’Reilly calls for independent research into cases of coerced abortion
------------------------------------------------------------
Senator Sarah O’Reilly has called on the Minister for Health to conduct independent research into telemedicine abortion and coercive abortions taking place. Her call follows incidents where women in Ireland were coerced into having abortions, and recent media reports that revealed the Department of Social Protection will not accept online sick certs for social welfare schemes yet telemedicine abortion is supported by the Government, where women are not required to have any face-to-face contact with an abortion provider before abortion pills are administered. As Senator O’Reilly put it: “The telemedicine system is not robust enough for the Department [of Social Protection] when it pertains to finances, but when it comes to the healthcare and treatment of women it sees no issue. This is particularly concerning in cases of potential coercion and abuse.”

Stephen Doohan who has been sentenced to 10 years in prison
** Paramedic jailed for giving woman abortion pill without her knowledge
------------------------------------------------------------
A paramedic who tricked a woman into having an abortion by secretly inserting abortion drugs into her during sex has been sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison.
Stephen Doohan, 33, from Edinburgh, was married when he met the woman during a holiday in Spain in 2021. The two began a long-distance relationship.
In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to meet Doohan after discovering she was pregnant. The High Court in Glasgow heard that in May 2023, an investigation began after the woman raised concerns with the Scottish Ambulance Service about what she believed Doohan had done.
When sentencing Doohan, who was a clinical team leader with the Ambulance Service, Lord Colbeck told the court on Monday: “You put her through considerable pain over a number of days, and left her facing a lifetime of pain and loss.” He added that Doohan had inflicted “long-term psychological injury” on the woman.

CEDAW’s abortion proposals for Ireland are, as always, utterly predictable
True to form, the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has issued its latest round of pro-abortion recommendations to Ireland.
Following its recent review of Ireland’s abortion law, the committee called for the urgent implementation of the radical recommendations of the 2023 O’Shea Review on the new abortion regime here. Disgracefully, they also called for the obliteration of any remaining freedom of conscience protections for healthcare workers who don’t wish to facilitate in abortions, and they’ve called on the Government to consider fully decriminalising abortion and abolishing the mandatory three-day waiting period.
It’s astonishing that a body claiming to defend human rights would push Ireland toward abortion on demand up-to-birth. But considering its track record on the issue, CEDAW forfeited the mantle of impartial human rights protector a very long time ago
.
One positive thing however that stands out in the CEDAW report is in the section on ‘Women with disabilities’ where it includes ‘forced sterilisation and coercive abortion’ as grounds for ‘comprehensive reparations for women and girls, that are consistent with international standards’. Despite all the valid criticisms of CEDAW, this particular inclusion in the report is
certainly a welcome one.
Barbaric reality of abortion procedure discussed at US Senate hearing
Senator John Kennedy lays bare the harsh reality of what abortion involves. It may not be pleasant, but it’s essential to break through the denial regarding what happens.
