I’m back in
court challenging the Trump administration:
The Department of Education should be focused on supporting the success
and education of millions of students across the country. But under Donald
Trump and Linda McMahon, today’s Department of Education is using flimsy
excuses to illegally rip away funding from critical school mental health
programs.
Last month, I sued the Department of Education to fight back — and this
week I filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to block this unlawful
discontinuation of grants, including roughly $200 million awarded to
educational institutions in California.
[ [link removed] ]If you agree that Trump’s Department of Education shouldn’t be
illegally withholding Congressionally-established grant funding for school
mental health programs, I’m asking you to stand with me by signing on
today.
The mental health programs affected were established by Congress to
support students in need after a devastating wave of tragic school
shootings — so they can not just get by in school, but thrive. And these
programs have been incredibly successful, with some of the initial data
showing a 50% reduction in suicide risk at high-need schools, increases in
positive engagement between students and staff, and decreases in
absenteeism and behavioral issues.
These programs work — and losing this funding will cause immense harm to
California students, particularly those in rural and low-income
communities. An interruption in mental health services leaves vulnerable
students high and dry, abandoned by their leaders.
That’s why I’m back in court, working to ensure students have access to
critical mental health programs. We’re asking the court to block the
administration’s illegal actions while litigation continues — and if
