Fifty-six years ago, Georgia Governor Lester Maddox urged state officials to shut down public schools rather than comply with federal integration orders.

This was beyond a simple policy disagreement. This was about upholding white power and denying Black students their constitutional right to education. But the former governor and plenty of folks alike preferred to dismantle educational institutions rather than have progress towards racial equity.

Today, this fight for educational justice is far from over. What’s happening is a coordinated attack by the Trump Regime and Republicans across the country to advance a far-right agenda that enhances white supremacy and disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities.

Right now, we’re seeing:

* Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion rollbacks in higher education
* Nationwide book bans, targeting Black and brown authors and artists
* Efforts to dismantle the Department of Education
* Far-right elected officials on local school boards pushing anti-history, anti-fact agendas

Even “Our Time Is Now” by Stacey Abrams originally made the list of banned books from the U.S. Naval Academy library under the Trump regime—a book that chronicles the erosion of voting rights, highlights the far right’s attacks on democracy, and provides a blueprint for ending voter suppression and empowering our fellow citizens to uphold and expand free and fair elections.The Navy has since walked back its ban of over 250 books.

Friend: This is exactly why every single election matters. From local school boards to state legislatures, all the way to the White House, who we elect in every office has the power to shape our livelihoods and every generation after.

Racism, extremism, and the quest for power unite far-right officials at every level of government. They’re dead-set on attacking education, our nation’s honest history, and voting freedom. These attacks are made possible by suppressing the vote and silencing the voices of marginalized communities.
