John, as I gather my thoughts about what Donald Trump's tax bill will mean for this country, I want to share with you my disbelief at how anyone could have voted for its passage.

It would mean a lot to me if you would hear me out, but I know your time is valuable.

If you don’t have time to read the whole message but are committed to our work of taking the Senate out of Republican hands in 2026, you can make a donation here >> [link removed]

There’s a verse from Scripture that has always stayed with me: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

To me, that is a radical call to action. It’s a challenge to see the dignity in every person and to fight for the well-being of every community, especially those too often left behind. That principle has guided me throughout several aspects of my life — in my faith, my work, and my time in the Senate.

I’ve always believed in bipartisanship. I still do. I’ll work with anyone, from any party, to build bridges that will support the people we serve. Some of the proudest moments in our country’s history have happened when Democrats and Republicans set aside their differences and came together. There is so much more that unites us than divides us, and I remain committed to that ideal.

But bipartisanship cannot mean silence in the face of injustice.

Last week, I watched nearly every one of my Republican colleagues vote for Donald Trump’s reckless tax bill — a bill they knew would harm the very people they represent. I was in the rooms where these discussions happened. I listened as some of them openly admitted that this bill would devastate working families, gut healthcare access, and leave our most vulnerable neighbors behind. They knew the truth, and they voted for it anyway.

There will be a lot of articles and think pieces from political pundits trying to explain the GOP's decision, but I want you to know that they did it out of fear. Fear of Donald Trump and corporate interests who bankroll their campaigns. Fear of losing their next election. The few Republicans who did find the backbone to vote against this disaster are now facing vicious attacks and public shaming from Trump and his allies.

What does it say about the state of our democracy when standing on principle becomes a political death sentence? Something needs to change.

I’ve spent my career working across the aisle, and I’ll keep doing so when it means helping our communities. I will not stand by quietly while Republican leaders abandon their duty to their constituents just to please Donald Trump and his wealthy donors.

I will do everything in my power to fight the harm this bill will cause. But the truth is, the greatest power to change the direction of this country lies in your hands. In 2026, we have the chance to elect a Senate that has the backbone to stand up — not just to Donald Trump, but to any president or political machine that forgets who we are meant to serve.

If you believe, as I do, that this country is worth fighting for, I’m asking you to make a donation today. Chip in to help me elect a Senate in 2026 that remembers its purpose and has the backbone to do what’s right >> [link removed]

With gratitude,

Chris
