Ottawa spent $540 billion last year. That’s up 43 per cent in 10 years even after accounting for inflation.

The Carney government said it’s launching a review to rein in Ottawa’s runaway spending. And government union bosses are already fearmongering.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees called the potential savings “draconian rollbacks” and promised to “fight to defend against the devastating impacts that Mr. Carney’s cuts will have.”

The government spent $8 million building a barn on the governor general’s estate.

The government added 99,000 more federal paper pushers and ballooned the cost of the bureaucracy by 73 per cent since 2016.

And the government put taxpayers on the hook for about $30 billion in subsidies so multinational corporations can build battery factories.
