Friend,
The reports from the devastating flash floods in Texas are both heartbreaking and terrifying. Water levels rose over 25 feet in just minutes, entire buildings and homes were swept away, and over 100 lives were lost – with many more still unaccounted for.
We must ensure the federal government has all the resources it needs to support those affected in Texas and other communities hit by natural disasters.
But in recent months, Donald Trump has called for the elimination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) altogether.
Dismantling FEMA would be a disastrous decision at any time – but in light of these catastrophic floods, it's unconscionable.
Anyone who has witnessed the aftermath of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, or wildfires understands just how vital FEMA is. The Trump administration must take every possible step to prevent tragedies like this in the future. That starts with fully funding FEMA.
Join me in calling on Trump to back off his threats to eliminate FEMA and commit to fully funding this essential agency.
Sincerely,
Chuck Schumer
