For over 50 years, the Clean Water Act has protected our lakes, rivers, wetlands, and drinking water. It was created with broad bipartisan support to ensure that all communities have access to safe, clean water – including here in the Great Lakes region. That legacy is now in serious danger.
Right now, Congress is considering the misguided PERMIT Act (H.R. 3898). This legislation is harmful to health and the environment and would take us backwards. It weakens longstanding, effective environmental protections, undermines implementation of sound science, and gives polluters more permission to contaminate the waters we rely on for drinking, fishing, boating, paddling and enjoyable outdoor recreation. Tell your Representative to vote NO on the PERMIT Act before it reaches the House floor for a vote! |
This flawed legislation passed through committee without accepting a single proposed amendment to reduce its harm to the rivers and lakes that support healthy communities and economies. It allows more pollution and blocks states and communities from defending their own waterways.
Americans overwhelmingly support safe clean water protections under the Clean Water Act. State enforcement and other actions to protect clean water should not be unduly constrained by the federal government.
People across the country are concerned about outdated water infrastructure, pollution from industrial agriculture, and PFAS forever chemicals in drinking water. This bill is the opposite of what people want. It creates new loopholes that would allow more toxic substances into our water with less oversight and less accountability.
The PERMIT Act could be up for a vote in the House as early as next week. It is urgent that Congress hears from you now. |
