Over the weekend, devastating flash floods wreaked havoc across multiple states, killing at least 90 people in Texas alone.

My heart is with the victims and their families. But the unfortunate truth is that this was completely avoidable, friend.

The regional weather service office’s warning coordination meteorologist, who organizes alerting the outside world about agency forecasts, took a Trump administration buyout in April. And the office’s Science Operations Officer, who implements new technology and data, also retired around the same time under DOGE pressure.

These are the real-time impacts of the far-right’s mindless war on climate science. It’s a costly reminder that cuts that might sound okay on a spreadsheet, are in fact highly-skilled, highly-trained specialists where the cost of catastrophe will far outweigh any savings.

As a meteorologist for more than two decades, I depended on these colleagues at the National Weather Service to provide accurate, life-saving weather reports for my neighbors. Our community stayed safe because of the information I gave them, that came from these organizations.

Now, we’re not just losing time that could have been spent innovating and leading in climate science, something we’ve proudly done for decades, but basic services – like alerting the public ahead of major storms – are being crippled.

This is a five-star alarm, and it’s important that we not look away while this is happening.

As the only trained meteorologist in Congress, I am fighting back against any attempt to undermine the public servants at NOAA and the National Weather Service immediately. And I hope you’ll stand with me.

That’s why I’m asking you once again to commit to continue mobilizing against the far-right’s attack on climate science. Everything from our home insurance prices to our neighbors’ safety depends on it.
