Last August, Anne launched Autocracy in America, a podcast from The Atlantic walking listeners through the steps of democratic decline. Now, we’re pleased to announce that Garry will be joining as the host for the podcast’s second season, starting tomorrow: Friday, July 11.

We wrapped up the first season of Autocracy in America a week before the 2024 presidential election. What’s changed since then is both obvious and difficult to spot.

Every fresh insult to American institutions—whether from the White House or a seemingly impotent political opposition—drives home the need to talk about authoritarianism in this country. But the parade of outrages also means it’s difficult to parse what’s really important. It makes the abnormal normal. It numbs our senses, reducing our physiological feedback over each successive crisis to a dull pain.

That’s why Garry is joining to lead the podcast this season. He grew up under one dictatorship in the Soviet Union and saw how Russia’s nascent democracy was supplanted by another. His firsthand experience is the bucket of icy water that Americans need to feel to wake up from their stupor and join the fight.

Tune in to Autocracy in America from The Atlantic, starting tomorrow: Friday, July 11. And if you want to hear more from Garry, be sure to subscribe to The Next Move for incisive commentary, Q&As, videos, and more.
