Dear Friend,
Today would have been my mother’s 104th birthday. Though she may not be here to share in this celebration, she is always with me. And she is with you, too, because she remains the soul of the Special Olympics movement.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver was – in one word – relentless.
My mother was determined to make the world an accepting and opportunity-filled place for every person with intellectual disabilities (ID). She was unwavering in her devotion to her family, her faith, and her drive to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity. Through founding Special Olympics, she sparked a global movement that championed inclusion, joy, and human potential. She was fierce in her love – and the most playfully competitive, and driven mother you could imagine.
Because of her, millions of people of all abilities, in nearly every country on Earth, have found the unbounded JOY of playing sports, being on a team, and discovering the best in themselves. It is impossible to ignore her impact.
Happy 104th birthday to my mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver — the visionary founder of Special Olympics. I’m a proud son and lifelong student of one extraordinary woman.
Warmly,
