The Big Bad Budget Bill passed… Now what?

Let's get the word out far and wide: Trump and Republicans in Congress traded our health and future for polluter profits.

Will you send your local newspaper a Letter to the Editor to help make sure people in your community learn how this disastrous law will affect them?
(Be sure to customize your letter before submitting, which will make it much more likely to be published.)

Friend, Trump's megabill is the most anti-worker, anti-family, and anti-environment piece of legislation in U.S. history. It will destroy clean energy jobs, raise electricity prices, take away healthcare and food programs, auction off our public lands for extraction, and abandon working-class families in favor of tax breaks for billionaires and corporations.

Our Senators and Representatives in Congress who voted for this legislation must be held accountable and hear that we -- their constituents who voted them into office -- won't stand by, and won't forget.

Writing a letter to the editor of a local newspaper is a great way to show Members of Congress that we're paying attention to what they're doing. Staff closely monitor the opinion pages of newspapers in their districts, so they're very likely to see your letter if you name them!

We have an online tool that lets you easily send a Letter to the Editor to newspapers near you. Will you write your letter now?

Here are some examples of how this law will directly affect you:
- Rapidly phases out tax credits for wind and solar power, which will drive up our energy costs and make the grid less reliable.
- Cuts support that make homes and buildings more efficient and more affordable to operate, taking money out of your wallet.
- Eliminates financial incentives for new and used electric vehicles, stalling the American-made EV industry and resulting in job losses across the country.
- Withdraws aid for FEMA and the agencies that monitor extreme weather events, leaving too many communities vulnerable to climate disaster.
- Guts support for the National Park Service staff, meaning longer lines, less maintenance, fewer services, and less safe access to our most treasured landscapes this summer.
- Boosts drilling, mining and logging, including in special places like the Arctic and on public lands, to increase big industry profits while we pay.
- Throws millions of children, seniors, and families off Medicaid, other forms of healthcare coverage, and food assistance.
- Drives up the cost and access to education, which will slow economic growth and our ability to be globally competitive.
- Targets immigrant communities by ballooning the budget for ICE, making it the biggest federal law enforcement agency in the country -- four times larger than the FBI.

This law is cruel. It's reckless. Average people will pay the price.

It could have been much worse. But thanks to our collective advocacy, we successfully fought to remove parts that would have forced the sale of public lands across the country, implemented a steep energy tax on wind and solar energy power projects, and ended carbon pollution standards for vehicles on the road.

While these are significant wins, the passage of this megabill is still a massive loss. We need to ensure the members of Congress that voted for this monstrosity regret prioritizing the profits of their corporate donors over our health and the future.

Please write a Letter to the Editor to spread the news and hold them accountable!

Despite this setback, Sierra Club staff, volunteers, and advocates like you can and will continue to fight for people and the planet by supporting commonsense policies that lower energy costs, reduce climate pollution, and protect our public lands and backing politicians that vote for us, not corporate polluters.

We will spread the word. We will argue in favor of justice before the courts. We will lobby in the halls of Congress and in every state capitol. And we will march in the streets.

We can't do it without you. We will be by your side. Thank you for staying involved!
