I’m not going to sugar coat this: The Big Bad Betrayal Bill that Republicans passed in Congress and Donald Trump signed into law last week is really bad. It will lead to 17 million people losing health insurance and needless suffering, hunger, and higher costs for many of our families and communities.

We are outraged! And we need to tell Congressional Republicans: Shame on you! The moms of America are watching you!

The Big Bad Betrayal Bill was over 900 pages and we are still learning exactly the impact of what is in the bill. Every single Democrat did the right thing for families and the economy by voting “no” on the bill, and they were joined by five Republicans who voted against this awfulness: Senators Collins (ME), Tillis (NC), and Paul (KY) in the Senate and Representatives Fitzpatrick (PA-1) and Massie (KY-4). (But 51 Republicans in the Senate and 218 in the House did the wrong thing for families by voting for this betrayal of a bill. Not good)

Here is what we currently know and how you and your family could be impacted:

• Health Care Taken Away: Drastically cuts Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which will take health care away from nearly 17 million people, undermine maternal and child health, and close 300 rural hospitals. This will disproportionately impact children, seniors, new parents, people with disabilities, and low-income families. Those on Medicaid will also have more red tape requirements and will need to pay more out-of-pocket to see a doctor. It will also hurt our communities by raising health care costs, closing obstetric and other specialty units in hospitals, and forcing states to make agonizing budget decisions over whether to cut health care, or other priorities like education, public safety, and infrastructure, harming all of our medical care regardless of where our insurance comes from. [1] 

• Nutrition Assistance Gutted: Makes a historically harmful $186 billion cut to SNAP/food stamps, enforces new work requirements and red tape for parents with children over the age of 14, and, for the first time ever, shifts significant federal government spending of SNAP to states, forcing states to find millions of extra dollars in their budgets in order to serve hungry families, leading most states to cut people off the program or leave the SNAP program entirely. The changes this bill makes to SNAP are devastating and could lead to 2 million people losing nutrition assistance at a time of rising grocery costs. [2] 

• Planned Parenthood Undermined: Blocks Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funds, negatively impacting the over 2 million women a year who use their services for pregnancy and family planning, prenatal and postpartum services, cancer screenings, mental health care, vaccines, and more. NOTE: Planned Parenthood brought this provision to court and there is currently an injunction until at least July 21st. We are hoping this provision will be ruled illegal altogether. [3]

• Public Education and Early Education Cuts: $5 billion to fund private school vouchers which would harmfully divert funds from public schools that are already underfunded. The Medicaid cuts also will impact public school programs since Medicaid is the third-largest source of funding for K–12 public schools and funds nearly 30 percent of all early intervention (IDEA Part C) for infants and toddlers with disabilities. This will impact a wide range of therapies, educational programs, and mental health services.[4] 

• Expanded Human Rights Abuses of Immigrants: Republicans passed cuts to vital health care and nutrition assistance programs in order to add a whopping $170 billion in additional funds to pay for separating families, human rights abuses, and terrifying hardworking immigrants – people essential to our care workforce, our economy and our future. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cuts to healthcare and not cruelty. To put this in very concerning perspective: This is more funding than than the budgets of the FBI; Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the US Marshals Service; and Federal Bureau of Prisons combined! [5, 6] 

• Tax Breaks for Billionaires, Not Working Families: The entire genesis for the Republican package, and the vast majority of the spending is to give even more tax cuts to billionaires and mega-corporations. In fact, 70 percent of the tax cuts go to the richest fifth of Americans in 2026 and the richest 1 percent of Americans would receive an average net tax cut of $66,000, which is many, many times more than the average tax cut received by working families. This package also leaves behind 17 million children from receiving the full benefits of the Child Tax Credit because their parents’ incomes are too low. [7] Not only do Republicans slash our health care, nutrition assistance, and public education funding to do this, but they also increase the national debt by $3 trillion, harming our economy and leaving our kids with a legacy of debt. [8]

Republicans in Congress are as sneaky as they are cruel. While some of the provisions (many of the tax cuts for the rich) will go into effect later this year, many of the harsher provisions around Medicaid and SNAP won’t go into effect for another couple of years. [9] Just because some of the cuts are being delayed doesn’t mean they aren’t happening or we will ignore them.

The only good news is the Big Bad Betrayal Bill is already wildly unpopular! 55% of Americans opposed the bill before it was even passed and a majority believe they will not benefit from it! We expected this number to increase as people start to learn more about the bill AND start to feel the impact of its cuts. [10, 11]] 

The letter we are sending Republican leaders in Congress states the following:

“The One Big Beautiful Bill you voted for is a betrayal of our families, children, communities, and economy. Our country will be sicker and hungrier, less successful, and families will face much higher costs because of this legislation.

We did not send you to Washington, D.C. to take away our health care, nutrition, and public school funding in order to give billionaires even more tax breaks and to fund even more unfair separation of families, human rights abuses, and to terrify hardworking immigrants - people essential to our care workforce, our economy, and our future. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cuts to healthcare and not cruelty.

The moms of America are watching you and expect you to do better!”
