Commissioner's Column

With 30 June under your belt, many of you will be thinking ahead to your next Annual General Meeting. I have attended many charity and not-for-profit AGMs over the years, including some when I have been up for election as a board member, and would like to share some insights.

Is your charity's Annual Information Statement overdue?

A few of the most common questions we have been hearing from charities recently...

Q. I’ve made an error in my Annual Information Statement – how do I fix it?

Don't panic. We all make mistakes from time to time.

If you’ve already submitted your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and you’ve realised there’s an error, simply follow these steps:

Sign in to the  Charity Portal [[link removed]] and click on your charity's name.  Go to 'Manage reporting' and click on the icon 'Amend [year] AIS'.

The AIS will open on the receipt page. Use the headings at the top to navigate to the section that you need to amend.

From there, correct any errors, complete the declaration at the end and click submit.

If you need any further assistance, view our Annual Information Statement guidance [[link removed]] or contact us at [email protected]. [mailto:[email protected]]

Q. I've just realised that my charity has not submitted an Annual Information Statement (AIS) and it is now overdue. What should we do?

All charities are required to submit their AIS before the due date each year. Failing to submit can result in penalties. Failure to submit two statements can result in revocation of your charity's registration.

If your charity has an overdue AIS, you should log in to the Charity Portal [[link removed]] and submit it as soon as possible to avoid potential penalties or revocation of registration. There is no need to contact us to request an extension.

Resources for newly-registered charities

Charities must meet ongoing obligations to retain registration. You must notify us each time a Responsible Person (a committee or board member or trustee) commences or resigns from a position. Learn more [[link removed]].
