Deadly Flash Floods Devastate Various Regions of US: Rivers Surge to Record High, Children Among Victims

United States: A serene village nestled in the southern crags of New Mexico turned into a theatre of tragedy Tuesday, as ferocious monsoon bursts unleashed torrential floods that claimed the lives of three people—two of them children. The Village of Ruidoso, perched within the Sierra Blanca range, bore the brunt of what officials labeled as “unprecedented” deluge fury.

The Rio Ruidoso, typically a gentle mountain watercourse, erupted into chaos—its levels skyrocketing to a historic 20.24 feet. If verified, this would eclipse the previous benchmark of 15.86 feet, inscribed just a summer ago. Officials watched in disbelief as water levels soared from under 2 feet to above 20 in less than sixty minutes.

Emergency units scrambled in the downpour’s wake, executing no fewer than 85 urgent water rescues—plucking individuals from inundated homes and stranded vehicles alike. Danielle Silva of New Mexico’s Homeland Security echoed the scale of calamity in statements shared with the Associated Press.

Clips swarming social channels painted a bleak mosaic—residences swept from their foundations, trees wrenched from the soil, and muddied autos half-buried in sludge. One striking video revealed a family home drifting downstream like a leaf in a storm.

This calamity shadowed Texas' own recent disaster, where flash floods stole at least 111 lives and left 170 unaccounted for. The synchronized suffering has spotlighted the increasing ferocity of weather extremes across the South.
