Hi John,
It’s been six months since wildfires tore through Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino counties in California – destroying homes, devastating neighborhoods and causing widespread displacement. These wildfires caused unimaginable damage not just to critical infrastructure, but also to the overall health and well-being of children.
Children lost their homes, childcare centers, schools and parks — along with their sense of safety. But when those kids needed a place to learn, play and heal, Save the Children was there.
From the start of these wildfires, our teams and partners were there supporting communities. In the last six months, we’ve reached 28,349 people, including 17,000 children, by:
🛝 Providing 2,700+ kids with a safe space to play and learn while their parents worked to rebuild their lives
💰 Distributing $927,750 in cash assistance to help families get temporary housing, groceries and other essentials
🍼 Delivering 289,916 items such as diapers, hygiene kits, clothing, toys and books to nearly 23,000 families
Save the Children has worked tirelessly to meet the urgent needs of kids and their families – and we’ll continue to stay to help families heal, rebuild and recover. Traumatic events like these can impact children’s lives for years to come. Our motto – our promise – is that we stay as long as it takes.

Esperanza in front of the newly built childcare center
Esperanza ran a childcare center in an area heavily impacted by the fires. The entire center was burned to the ground, leaving parents with nowhere to take their children while working to build back their lives.
Save the Children partnered with the Child Care Alliance of Los Angeles to help 100 childcare providers get back up and running as quickly as possible – including Esperanza.
With this support, Esperanza found a new location and transformed it into a beautiful, welcoming space for kids.

Esperanza’s new childcare center helps kids get back to learning and provides children and families with the mental health support they need to recover. By focusing on disaster recovery for child care and schools, we partner with communities to help children bounce back more effectively and build resilience for the future.
