BBB quote
Dear Friend,
Last week, President Trump signed the reckless, destructive ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ into law that will threaten the health, security, and economic stability of tens of millions of Americans—including hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who stand to lose their health care coverage and countless working families who could lose the SNAP benefits they use to put food on the table. Working families will bear the brunt of these consequences while the wealthy get a huge tax cut and we add $4.2 trillion to our national debt.
Nearly 15,000 Michiganders wrote in to my office and shared their stories about how these cuts will devastate their lives. My office shared all these stories with members of our Congressional delegation, including Representatives John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga. Those representatives voted against their constituents, leaving them with higher costs and without the health care they need.
I want to thank Michigan’s Democratic representatives for standing up for their neighbors and voting to protect their health care, food security, and futures. I stand with them and remain committed to doing everything in my power to defend Michiganders. It’s time to stop playing politics with people’s lives and focus on real, commonsense solutions that improve people’s lives.
While Republicans in the United States House and Senate have made it harder for families to get by, here in Michigan, we will work together to deliver on the kitchen-table issues that make a real difference in their lives. Their extreme bill will create more hoops for families to jump through just to enroll in Medicaid or SNAP, including increased work requirements to receive healthcare or food for their kids.
*As governor, I am working hard to make sure Michiganders can still get the help they need to take care of themselves and their families. I will do everything I can to minimize the negative & destructive impacts of President Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ here in Michigan.*
See below for resources on how to stay informed about changes to Medicaid and SNAP and important updates on how to stay enrolled.
Sincerely,

How Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Could Affect You
The U.S House of Representatives voted to pass the extreme Republican budget bill, which raises grocery and utility bills for working families, terminates health care for millions of Americans, and will result in the layoffs of hundreds of thousands of workers. President Trump has signed the bill into law. While much of the changes will not go into effect for a while, Michiganders should stay informed about how to retain access to their healthcare and food assistance.
Here are some specific provisions you should be aware of, especially if you use Medicaid or SNAP:
* *Work Requirements: *The deepest cuts to health care come from changes to Medicaid work requirements. Millions of Americans will lose their health care because they do not meet new employment or reporting standards. Most working-age Americans using Medicaid already work, are looking for work, or are unable to work because they have a disability or other exemption. These changes will punish our friends and neighbors and make it harder for folks who need help to get it. In Michigan, some Medicaid enrollees will have to regularly file paperwork proving that they are working, volunteering, or attending school at least 80 hours a month, or that they qualify for an exemption. The bill also increases the frequency of Medicaid eligibility checks to every six months, adding another barrier for those who need health care. The new requirements will start as early as January 2027.
* *Rural Hospital Closures*: Medicaid supports nearly 20% of net patient revenues for Michigan hospitals, being especially critical for Michiganders in rural areas where local hospitals are often the largest employers. With these cuts to Medicaid, thousands of jobs are on the chopping block and rural hospitals will close, making our communities less safe and healthy.
* *Increased Working Age for SNAP Food Assistance and Medicaid: *The legislation will make it harder for Michiganders in need to get food to feed their families. The bill raises the working age to qualify for SNAP recipients without dependents from 54 to 64, meaning more Americans 55+ will be without food. Similar changes have been made to Medicaid working ages.
* *Enrolling in Affordable Health Care Will Be Harder:* Michiganders receiving their health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace will be required to update their income, immigration status, and other information each year, rather than be allowed to automatically re-enroll — something millions of Americans did this year. They'll also have less time to enroll because the bill shortens the annual open enrollment period by about a month.
Stay Informed – Get Support
Michiganders are still encouraged to apply for Medicaid and SNAP if they are eligible or to submit a renewal application to ensure they have access to health care and food assistance coverage.
As governor, I will continue working with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to ensure every Michigander who is eligible for Medicaid and SNAP gets the support they need to build healthy, successful lives here in Michigan for themselves and their families.
Federal changes to work requirements will not take place until 2027 at the earliest, but Michiganders should stay informed about how to meet and/or properly report their employment status to best avoid losing coverage.
