Since high school, I’ve understood that meaningful environmental action is ultimately a political issue.

Wanting to address the issue, I chose to study Environmental Studies and Government in college. While I enjoy the work, it sometimes feels like I’m earning a degree in identifying and lamenting all the challenges facing the environmental movement.

If I had a penny for every time I wrote “lack of political will” in a paper, I’d be as rich as a fossil fuel executive.

This summer, as an intern on the team at Maine Conservation Voters (MCV), I’ve had the chance to move beyond the classroom and take direct action. I’ve shadowed MCV staff at the State House, where the future of the environment in Maine is shaped by the hands of lawmakers, and I’ve helped mobilize grassroots support in the key moments before big votes.
