Hi Friends of 5 Gyres,

This Plastic Free July, let’s talk about the pollution you can't see. You’ve probably heard plenty about ditching single-use plastics and bringing your own reusables — but microplastics are an invisible threat that deserve just as much attention. These tiny plastic particles are floating in our oceans, drifting through the air, and making their way into our bodies.

A surprising source of microplastic pollution? Fibers from the clothes we wear every day. While there are steps you can take on an individual level, such as washing your clothes less and shopping secondhand ([link removed]) , real impact also depends on companies driving change from within and setting a new industry standard.

The 5 Gyres Institute and The Nature Conservancy released Reducing Microfiber Pollution: An Industry Playbook ([link removed]) – a set of science-based, cost-effective, and easily actionable resources to support brands in reducing microfiber emissions. The guides provide practical strategies for implementing solutions across the entire textile supply chain, including design, sourcing, and manufacturing.

Ambassadors Taking Action

Congratulations to the 5 Gyres Ambassadors who completed the first round of our Ambassador Action Fund! Through this program, 5 Gyres supports the work of Ambassadors in our focus areas (science, advocacy, and TrashBlitz) through funding, mentorship, and resources. Read about the first cohort below, and spread the word — applications for round 2 are open through July 18! ([link removed])

Katie Abare mobilized volunteers in her community, collecting over 10,000 plastic pellets from marshlands in Charleston, South Carolina. Then, she joined 5 Gyres in Washington D.C. to advocate for a Microplastic-Free US ([link removed]) !

Diego Arreola Fernandez led a research project, Garbage-less Groceries, focused on reducing single-use plastics in grocery stores. He created a resource folder ([link removed]) for others to mimic his work and make a bigger impact.

Anna Galipeau led a successful TrashBlitz at a remote part of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. She’s using the data to better understand sources of trash and develop strategies to prevent future pollution.

Speak Up for Plastic-Free Parks!

Our national parks need us now, more than ever. Here are three ways to take action:
* Urge your elected officials to prioritize policies that reduce waste and protect our public lands ([link removed])
* Participate in the annual Plastic-Free Parks TrashBlitz ([link removed]) by using the TrashBlitz app to log trash at any federal land
* Join 5 Gyres at Yosemite Facelift ([link removed]) in September! Stay tuned for more details.

More Ways to Give: Recurring Donations

Our new donation page ([link removed]) offers a variety of creative ways to support 5 Gyres, including crypto donations ([link removed]) , DAFs ([link removed]) , and even bequests in your will ([link removed]) . To make a big impact with a small price tag, consider activating a recurring gift. Whether it is $5 a month or $100 a year, recurring, dependable gifts are an incredible way to show that you believe in our ongoing work to drive science-backed solutions to plastic pollution.
