Friend -
Alright, this one hits close to home.
A few weeks ago, I shared that my partner and I decided not to give our eldest daughter a smartphone. Instead, we “bribed” her with something we think will serve her better: $1,000 in a high-yield savings account.
And y’all… some folks scoffed at the idea. At the dollar amount. At the concept.
Let me tell you—I was peeved.
Because yes, $1,000 might not seem like a lot to some. But to millions of Americans, that amount is everything. In fact, nearly half of Americans can’t cover a $1,000 emergency expense. ( Here’s the data [[link removed]] if you need receipts.)
As a dual-income working mom, I know how fortunate we are to be able to absorb surprise costs—like a broken washing machine or a car that won’t start. But that comfort doesn’t make me immune to the realities outside my own home. It makes me more aware. More motivated. More determined.
And here’s the hard truth: the very people scoffing at the $1,000 price tag are often the ones too deep in insider politics to see that real change starts with meeting real needs .
We don’t need more out-of-touch talking points. We need progressive policies that put food on the table, keep the lights on, and provide dignity—not just in emergencies, but every day.

As prices keep climbing (shoutout to our favorite Orange Cheeto 🙄), this is our moment. Our opportunity to fight for the kind of economic justice that makes real stability possible. Let’s stop tinkering around the edges and start building the safety nets our communities deserve.
To those who think $1,000 is chump change: it’s not. It’s a lifeline . And the divide between who laughs it off and who clings to it for survival is exactly what we’re fighting to close.
I know I’m privileged. I also know I’m putting my energy where my values are—by raising girls to understand money, justice, and self-worth; and by working at an organization committed to human and civil rights for all.
So if you’re one of the lucky ones, how are you showing up?
💥 How are you fueling the fight?
💥 How are you investing in our future?
Let’s get real. Let’s get organized. Let’s make some good trouble.
In solidarity,
Edil Mari De Los Reyes
Your friendly neighborhood progressive mom

PowerPAC is a social justice organization that strategically directs financial and human resources to local and state organizations working to deliver wins in legislative fights, ballot initiatives, and more. For years the money we've raised has, dollar for dollar, been given back to the communities we work with. We've made sure that your investments were being used to build power for our communities because too often we are underrepresented and ignored.
