A Battle of Courage and Providence
The British and American forces, numbering around 1,900, marched toward Fort Duquesne to challenge French control of the Ohio River Valley. Outnumbered, the French and their 850 Indian allies launched a devastating ambush. Hidden in the dense forest, they unleashed volleys of musket fire, decimating the British ranks. Of the 1,300 British soldiers engaged, 714 were killed or wounded, including 63 of 86 officers. The French and Indians suffered minimal losses—only 33 killed and a few dozen wounded.
Amid the chaos, Washington rode across the battlefield delivering orders, a conspicuous target. An enemy warrior later marveled at the unexplainable, “I had seventeen fair fires at him with my rifle, and after all could not bring him to the ground!”
Did God miraculously preserve George Washington that day? Was there more, as the Rev. Davies claimed<[link removed]>, that Washington would be destined to do?
