Before this year’s hurricane season began, ProPublica reporters Jennifer Berry Hawes and Cassandra Garibay spent months investigating how much was lost in the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Many survivors shared stories of incredible trauma and loss.

As Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, communities along the Cane River in the Black Mountains were particularly vulnerable. But there were no evacuation orders, and few grasped what was coming.
