You told us that changes to the NDIS is making life harder for NDIS participants

We are taking action to raise your concerns at the highest levels including meeting with the NDIS Minister, the Acting CEO of the NDIA and the Secretary of the Department of Health, Ageing and Disability.

The Minister and the NDIA  have committed to us that they will be addressing our concerns and that a review is underway.

Today we release a Joint Statement with 18 disability rights organisations calling on the government to take action.

The statement makes clear that funding periods must reflect each person’s needs and circumstances – not be applied in a one-size-fits-all way.

You have the right to have your personal circumstances and needs taken into account when your planner is setting your funding period. If your funding period doesn’t meet your needs, you have the right to a review.

Dr Darren O’Donovan, an expert in disability rights law, recently spoke about what these funding period changes mean – and what your rights are.

“Funding periods cannot be generic. The law requires the NDIA to engage with each person about what will work best for them.”

In this interview, Dr O’Donovan also unpacks the NDIS support lists and why it’s important we speak up. Check out the full interview with Darren in the YouTube video below:

Have you had trouble with the new NDIS "in" and "out" lists? We want to hear from you.

We’re running a survey to collect real stories and feedback about how the "in" and "out" lists are affecting people.

New NDIS rules are having an impact – we want to hear from you

On 3 October 2024, the NDIS changed the Section 10 rules to make it clearer what NDIS funds can and can't be used for.

There’s now an official list of things you can use your NDIS funds for, and a list of things you can’t. If you need something that’s not on the list, you have to apply for special approval.

These changes were meant to make things easier and clearer – but we’re hearing that for many people, they’ve created new challenges.

Here’s what people are telling us:

  • They’ve lost choice or flexibility in their plans

  • They’re getting different answers from different people

  • They’re finding it harder to stay healthy and independent

  • People in regional areas and diverse communities face more barriers

  • The process feels confusing, and people want clear information

  • Some feel their feedback isn’t being heard

We’re collecting people’s experiences to include in a community submission to government. If these changes have affected you or someone you support, we’d really like to hear from you.

Already filled it out? Thank you! Please share the link with anyone who might want to tell their story.

New Opinion Piece: Why Therapy Matters and What the Community Response Tells Us

In a powerful new piece, Muriel Cummins reflects on the strong public response to recent changes to therapy funding under the NDIS – including the fast-growing petition against cuts to allied health travel and other reforms.

She writes about what this groundswell really means: that Australians care deeply about the NDIS, and are prepared to stand up for its values – inclusion, fairness, and choice.
