Friend,
Yesterday marked a somber anniversary for our city.
6 months ago, our communities were devastated by one of the most dire natural disasters in U.S. history. Tens of thousands of Angelenos were impacted by the historic and unimaginable tragedy caused by these wildfires throughout the region.
No matter how fast this recovery goes – the pain and devastation will always be felt, and that’s why my top priority in the last six months has not wavered: getting Angelenos home.
Here’s an update on our progress:
- The City of Los Angeles conducted the fastest removal of hazardous materials in EPA History. Phase 1 of the debris removal finished in 28 days — months ahead of expectations.
- We’re removing debris and rebuilding at a historic pace. Our debris removal process is nearly 80% complete, and more than 650 plan applications have been submitted to the L.A. Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). More than 220 plans have been approved and more than 165 permits have been issued. The first permit was issued 57 days after the start of the wildfires, more than twice as fast as permits were issued after the devastating Camp and Woolsey Fires.
- We have passed emergency executive orders to return and rebuild. I've taken executive action to cut through red tape, provide tax relief for impacted small businesses, and expedite the rebuilding of homes and businesses in ways that better protect against future wildfires.
- We are providing relief for survivors. We opened the One-Stop Rebuilding Center for home and business owners to get everything they need from the City to rebuild and have served over 3,500 people in need.
We are making rebuilding feasible and affordable, accelerating permitting to cut red tape and streamline the rebuilding process, and building back our city together.
Our lives and our community will never be the same, but we are L.A. strong — and I will never stop working to rebuild together.
Thank you for being a part of this,
