Last week, the Republican led Senate passed Donald Trump’s tax bill and I proudly voted “No.” I took an oath to represent and protect the people of Delaware and this nation, and I will never sacrifice my duty. Far too many of my Republican colleagues made a different choice.

One Republican senator admitted it was “agonizing” to vote yes. She then urged the House to vote no — on a bill she just helped pass. Another colleague, who had the courage to vote no, has already announced he will not seek re-election next year because he dared to defy Donald Trump.

We knew this bill would hurt the most vulnerable in our states and gut essential services to hand tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. Even House Republicans are calling it too extreme. Yet, it passed through the Senate because too many of my colleagues are terrified of what Donald Trump might do to them politically.

There is always something to be said for bipartisanship — I work toward it every day — but it becomes nearly impossible when one party in the Senate bows not to the Constitution or the people, but to a single man.

The job of the Senate is to lead with the courage and say "No" when our people are threatened. That’s why I’m making it my mission to flip the Senate blue and restore accountability to this chamber.
