Tina for Oregon

John, cell phones are essential personal items these days. But for kids and teens, this modern technology can be more of a harm than a help.

Research clearly shows that cell phone use has a negative impact on young people’s mental health, attention spans, and self-esteem. Teachers around the state also report they disrupt their classrooms, hinder their ability to teach, and lead to worse learning outcomes.

That’s why we took action:  Last week, I signed an Executive Order banning student use of cell phones during the school day, starting this fall.

I believe the research and what I’ve heard from students:  If students are off their phones and fully engaged with teachers from the start of the first class of the day to the last bell, they’ll be better supported, focused in the classroom, have increased connection to their classmates, and will see improved overall wellbeing.

I’m committed to creating educational environments that lead to better futures for our students — and that begins with making sure our students can focus on learning during the school day.

If you believe in our vision for students, will you add your name right now?
