The House passed the Big Ugly Bill on Thursday, and I spent the long weekend sitting with the policy impacts, long-term consequences, and what this piece of legislation means for all of us.
But today, I just wanted to reach out on a personal level. Because if you’re reading this, chances are you care deeply about this movement: whether you work in the space, volunteer your time, or simply care about building a livable future.
And I know how discouraging Thursday’s vote was.
We’ve all poured so much into this fight, from building momentum for clean energy to speaking up for scientific research. Many of you have donated your own hard-earned money to ensure that pro-climate leaders are in the halls of Congress. To see our elected officials destroy the fruits of our labor and set us back decades is beyond frustrating. It’s demoralizing, and it’s just plain hard.
But if there’s one thing I know about our shared work, it’s that we don’t give up after one bad vote. We’ve faced tough obstacles before. We’ve flipped seats, passed myriad laws, and grown our pro-climate coalition to the largest membership it has ever had.
I sent this in an email last week, but it bears repeating today: the climate protections we enjoyed before this administration were not built in one Congress, one presidential term, or even one decade.
It took years and years of pro-climate actors on every front – including folks like you and I – all working toward the same goal. And that’s what we’ll keep doing as we redouble our efforts to grow our coalition to build the majority we need to deliver for our climate.
