As a registered nurse, I know what the consequences of Republicans’ greed will be: people will die, hospitals will close, and kids will starve.

Let me break it down: Republicans have just approved the largest wealth transfer from working people to the ultra-rich in our country’s history — and in doing so, will rip away health care coverage from 17 million Americans.

Here in Illinois, over 70% of days spent in nursing home care are covered by Medicaid. These cuts will leave vulnerable seniors without the care they need. Staffing levels could drop even further at places that are already at dangerously low levels.

And the thing is, John, our health care system is a shared fate. The local clinics that we rely on for affordable care, which are supported with Medicaid reimbursements, may not be able to afford to close the gap and serve our communities. Employer-sponsored coverages may be at risk with these cuts. Everyone will feel the devastating impacts.

Donald Trump and his administration are pushing for these cuts and playing political games that will lead to a collapse of our vital health care systems, all to satisfy the wealthy billionaires behind the curtain.
