Earlier this month, I sat in a closed-door briefing with top national security officials about the strikes on Iran. I wish I could tell you I left with more clarity about what’s happening with Iran, but I didn’t.
Here’s what I can tell you: The president is claiming those strikes “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program. But the intelligence community is telling a very different story. No one seems to know what happened to Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium — the same uranium that could be used to build a nuclear weapon.
It only takes a few trucks to move that uranium, and it could be anywhere by now. But instead of being honest about the risks, this administration is trying to convince the public that everything’s fine and that we should just move on.
That’s not how national security should work. The American people deserve facts, not political spin. They deserve real answers before we get dragged deeper into military conflict.
JOhn, it’s not just about the strikes themselves — it’s about how this was handled from the start: no consultation with Congress, conflicting information from top officials, and military operations being coordinated over apps like Signal.
And what’s more, we have a president whose relationship with both the truth and with social media is creating real risks for our troops and intelligence officers.
I’m proud to be part of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, which enshrines Congress’s right to conduct oversight – no matter how difficult the administration tries to make it. And as a public servant, it’s my duty to fight for transparency and accountability. Thank you for standing with me.
