The U.S. Supreme Court recently handed down some of the most chilling decisions we’ve seen in decades right as their term ended in June — and the consequences of these rulings will be devastating.
In Trump v. CASA, Inc, the Court punted its decision on whether or not Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship is unconstitutional, but it ruled that lower courts cannot issue nationwide injunctions to block it.1 This weakens the power of the judicial branch and leaves immigrant families in limbo.
In United States v. Skrmetti, the Court allowed Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth to stand.2 This is a devastating blow to the rights of vulnerable trans kids and their families everywhere, letting states rip away access to life-saving care.
In Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Court let stand a decision allowing states to block Medicaid patients from accessing care at Planned Parenthood.3 This cruel move opens the door for more states to deny patients access to basic reproductive healthcare, and could result in the closing of hundreds of Planned Parenthood clinics.
These rulings are not isolated — they’re a pattern made possible by a right-wing, extremist Supreme Court.
