This is Gena Hoyer, mother of Luke Hoyer, one of the 17 lives stolen at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Every summer, I think about where we were — and what we were feeling — in the months after our son Luke was taken from us at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

He was just 15. A sweet, kind, funny kid who loved basketball and chicken nuggets. He didn’t deserve what happened to him. None of the 17 did.

After the shooting, our families made a decision: to turn our pain into purpose. We founded Stand With Parkland to fight for safer schools, smarter policies, and a future where no family has to face what we’ve been through.

We marked another anniversary of this organization’s founding in June, and we're more committed than ever to our three pillars: physical security, mental health support, and responsible firearms ownership
