This weekend more than 88 Texans were killed in massive flooding.

As the death toll has risen since the floods began, many outraged Texans are now pointing to the Trump administration as part of the reason for why they did not receive an adequate warning.

The region’s Warning Coordination Meteorologist, the position whose role it would’ve been to warn Central Texas about the risk of flooding, was pushed by DOGE to take an early retirement package.

The deaths this weekend can be directly attributed to this fact. A better warning here could’ve saved lives.

These preventable deaths can now be added onto MAGA’s growing death toll — a number that will soon see a massive uptick given the millions of Americans who will die from preventable diseases as a result of Trump cutting medicaid in his recently passed spending bill.

If we can drive home to voters the damage that cuts to essential services, like weather warnings, and programs like medicaid, are doing to their quality of life, Democrats will win big in 2026.

Unfortunately there is a lot of discourse online along the lines of “MAGA got what they voted for” and “this is what red state voters get for backing Trump.” This is exactly the wrong line for us to take. This will backfire and drive away folks who we could otherwise be welcoming into our tent.

We need to lead with empathy on these issues if we hope to persuade voters and win.
